A historic turning point for the MLDC
The ordinary Congress of the Movement for the Liberation and Development of Cameroon (MLDC) was held on April 26, 2025, in Édéa. This meeting marked a historic step for the party, bringing together its activists from all regions of the country in a dynamic of renewal. It allowed for a comprehensive review of the MLDC's recent activities, the renewal of its governing bodies, and the redefinition of its political orientations. The congress thus confirmed the relevance of the MLDC's political project in the Cameroonian landscape. The legitimacy of this body was reinforced by the presence of patriarch Dr Marcel Yondo, former minister and founding figure of the MLDC, who was honored for his historical role.
Main results of the Congress
- Election of the national president: Professor Jimmy Yab, former secretary general of the party and renowned academic, was democratically elected National President of the MLDC. This election, resulting from the congress, benefited from broad consensus within the militant base, reaffirming Jimmy Yab at the head of the party.
- Appointment of an honorary president: In homage to his founding contribution, patriarch Dr Marcel Yondo was appointed Honorary President of the MLDC. Yondo, a former minister under President Ahmadou Ahidjo, is indeed one of the historical founders of the MLDC.
- Renewal of bodies and activity report: Delegates proceeded to renew the governing bodies and established a detailed report on the MLDC's actions. The congress validated the activity reports and adjusted the party's political program for the coming years.
- Militant mobilization: The strong participation in the congress confirmed the national presence of the MLDC: activists from all over the country mobilized to debate and vote on the new resolutions, testifying to the vitality of the movement.
- Political orientation: democratic alternation: The MLDC reaffirms its identity as a party of democratic alternation rather than traditional opposition. The congress highlighted its national project based on the "Community Developmentalist State (EDC)", a development model focused on economic, technological, and local sovereignty.
- Candidacy for the 2025 presidential election: A few days after the congress, Jimmy Yab was officially presented as the MLDC candidate for the 2025 presidential election during a party press conference. The investiture of its candidate at the end of the congress legitimizes the call for applications and positions the MLDC as a serious player in the electoral race.
This Édéa 2025 congress thus gave the MLDC a major institutional impetus. By renewing its leadership, honoring its founders, and sharpening its alternation project, the MLDC now presents itself as a credible political force, ready to put forward new candidacies for the renewal of national leadership.
