The Movement for the Liberation and Development of Cameroon (MLDC) holds a unique place in the political history of Cameroon in recent decades. Born in the turmoil of the return to multipartyism in the early 1990s, it was officially founded in 1998 around Marcel Yondo and former dignitaries converted to the opposition, in order to offer a patriotic and developmentalist alternative to the regime in place. Its evolution reflects the challenges of the Cameroonian opposition: fragmentation, quest for unity, maintenance of an existence under a semi-authoritarian regime.
Despite its limited electoral influence, the MLDC has distinguished itself by its constant commitment to democratic change, participating in the struggles for more freedoms and transparency. Even today, the legacy of Marcel Yondo and his MLDC companions recalls the crucial role that personalities from the former regime played in the conquest of pluralism. Their journey illustrates how, in Cameroon, the advent of multipartyism was the fruit of a broad front of patriots – young activists, civil society figures, but also former barons converted into opponents – united by the common will to "liberate" the political space and open the way to the democratic development of the country.
