"A visionary patriot, at the crossroads of Cameroon's political and economic history."
Education and early career
Marcel Yondo spent his childhood between Édéa (Littoral) and Ébolowa (South), before pursuing higher education in sciences. He obtained a degree in applied chemistry from the University of Ngaoundéré. Alongside his scientific training, he developed a keen interest in development economics. As early as 1970, he published a study entitled National Dimension and Economic Development, published in Paris, which testifies to his mastery of economic issues and his patriotic vision for Cameroon. This dual competence, both scientific and economic, marked the beginning of his professional and public career.
Career under President Ahidjo
Under the presidency of Ahmadou Ahidjo, Marcel Yondo first held senior civil servant positions. He served as a project manager then technical advisor to the Presidency of the Republic, where he contributed to the design of development policies. With his skills, he was appointed Minister of Finance in 1975, a position he held until 1978. In this capacity, he actively participated in the implementation of five-year economic development plans that earned Cameroon a period of sustained growth. His role is praised by his contemporaries: he is one of the architects of the country's financial modernization, ensuring the promotion of national savings and the financing of structuring investments. After his time in government, Marcel Yondo continued his contribution to regional development by joining the common institutions of Central Africa. He was thus among the first national directors of the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), representing Cameroon within this regional monetary institution. This experience reinforced his stature as a committed technocrat, combining technical expertise and strategic vision for the general interest.
Commitment to multipartyism
At the end of the 1980s, as Cameroon began its political opening, Marcel Yondo distinguished himself among the pioneers of democratic renewal. Taking advantage of the return of multipartyism in 1990, he resolutely engaged in the struggle for the establishment of a pluralistic political life. A former senior civil servant, he put his experience at the service of a constructive and patriotic opposition. Marcel Yondo campaigned for a peaceful democratization, based on respect for the rule of law and national dialogue. His stature as a former minister and his personal integrity made him a respected voice in public debate. He advocated for political alternation not out of a spirit of confrontation, but with a view to inclusive national development. In 1997, he presented his vision to Cameroonian voters for the first time by running as a candidate in the presidential election of that year. Through this candidacy, Marcel Yondo affirmed his role as a major actor in the republican opposition, determined to propose a credible alternative to the ruling power while rejecting all violence. His commitment to the democratic transition process then placed his name at the forefront of those working for a pluralistic and united Cameroon.
Founding of the MLDC and political role
In 1998, strong in his experience and commitment, Marcel Yondo founded the Movement for the Liberation and Development of Cameroon (MLDC), which he chaired as founding president. The MLDC aims to be the successor to a previous political movement, the MLJC, whose historic congress was held in January 1998 in Édéa. By transforming the MLJC into the MLDC, Marcel Yondo affirmed the desire to refound the Cameroonian opposition on new bases, combining the quest for democratic liberation with the demand for socio-economic development. Under his leadership, the MLDC positioned itself as a party of alternation, advocating for deep but pragmatic reforms. For him, it was not only a matter of challenging authoritarian excesses, but above all of proposing concrete solutions to improve governance and the well-being of citizens. In this perspective, the MLDC values citizen participation and national reconciliation, rejecting ethnic or regional divisions. Marcel Yondo made republican patriotism the foundation of his political action: he invited Cameroonians to unite around the ideals of freedom, unity, and progress. Under his impetus, the party structured itself and obtained representation in local and national institutions, testifying to the confidence of some voters in its message. Since its founding, the MLDC – guided by Marcel Yondo's vision – has strived to be a constructive actor on the political scene, focusing on the debate of ideas and the search for solutions for the development of Cameroon.
Positions and intellectual contributions
Throughout his career, Marcel Yondo distinguished himself by clear positions in favor of pluralistic democracy and autonomous development in Cameroon. His atypical career – from senior administration to opposition – is accompanied by in-depth reflection on the country's political evolution. In the 2000s, he published an essay entitled The Discourse and Practice of Democracy (the case of the urban Commune of Édéa), where he critically analyzed the gap between democratic rhetoric and the reality of local governance. This 94-page publication testifies to his intellectual commitment to greater coherence between democratic principles and their concrete implementation. Furthermore, Marcel Yondo has always defended the role of the rule of law and the importance of strong institutions serving citizens. He has spoken on multiple occasions about the need to strengthen decentralization, guarantee the independence of the judiciary, and promote good governance as pillars of development. On the economic front, his earlier writings show a constant concern for the promotion of local businesses and the financing of development. As early as 1986, in an article in the Cameroonian Management Review, he analyzed the challenges of financing small and medium-sized Cameroonian enterprises, advocating for better access for these SMEs to credit and capital. A visionary, Marcel Yondo understood that endogenous economic progress is inseparable from political emancipation. His innovative ideas on public finance management, the mobilization of national savings, and controlled industrialization influenced many Cameroonian decision-makers and intellectuals. Faithful to his convictions, he often recalled that development and democracy must go hand in hand, the former losing its meaning without freedom, and the latter remaining fragile without shared progress.
Honorary President of the MLDC
At the end of an exceptional career as a statesman – former Minister of Finance – and party leader, Marcel Yondo was awarded the title of honorary president of the Movement for the Liberation and Development of Cameroon (MLDC) in April 2025 during the third ordinary congress in Édéa. This elevation is the most solemn tribute, imbued with respect, that the party could pay to its founder. This honorary title, awarded during the party congress, has a profound symbolic significance: it formalizes the institutional recognition of the MLDC towards the one who has led it since its creation in 1998. He embodies the living political memory of the MLDC and is the custodian of its legacy: the ideals of liberation and development inscribed at the heart of the movement from its origins. A tutelary figure of the party, Marcel Yondo remains an example of unwavering commitment for militant generations: his journey – marked by integrity, courage, and fidelity to founding principles – inspires and will inspire militants of today and tomorrow.
